7 Days The Ultimate Great Migration Safari

After breakfast, you'll head out for game drives in Tarangire National Park, famous above all for its elephants — among the largest herds found anywhere in northern Tanzania. The park's landscape is unmistakable, dominated by ancient, swollen baobab trees rising out of dry-season grassland.

Alongside the elephants, Tarangire holds a rich variety of wildlife drawn to the Tarangire River, one of the few reliable water sources in the region for much of the year, including good numbers of lion, giraffe, and antelope. You'll overnight at Marera Valley, ahead of tomorrow's drive toward the Migration itself.

Today's drive takes you into the Serengeti National Park, with game viewing continuing along the way. Because the Great Migration is constantly on the move, your accommodation for the next three nights is selected specifically around where the herds are most likely to be found during your travel dates — rather than fixed to a single spot regardless of season.

Depending on when you're travelling, that might mean the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area during calving season (January to March), the Central Serengeti (April to June and November to December), the Western Serengeti Corridor (May to July), or the Northern Serengeti along the Mara River (July to October, famous for its river crossings). Your guide will brief you on exactly what to expect for your specific dates on arrival.

Today is a full day of game drives following the Migration herds, wherever they currently are within the Serengeti ecosystem. Millions of wildebeest and zebra move together at this time of year, and the sheer scale of the herds moving across the plains is something photographs never quite capture.

Beyond the herds themselves, this is also prime territory for the predators that follow them — lion, cheetah, and hyena are all drawn to wherever the wildebeest concentrate, and your driver-guide's local knowledge of the current Migration patterns gives you the best possible chance of a memorable day.

A second full day exploring the Migration areas gives you a genuinely strong chance at witnessing predator-prey interactions up close — whether that's a hunt in progress, a river crossing (if you're travelling during the July to October Mara River season), or simply the sheer spectacle of hundreds of thousands of animals moving as one.

Every day with the Migration is different, and your driver-guide will adapt today's route based on where the action has been unfolding, rather than following a fixed plan regardless of what's actually happening on the ground.

After a final morning game drive following the Migration, you'll begin the journey toward the Ngorongoro/Karatu area, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening. The transition from the Serengeti's endless plains to the greener, more cultivated Ngorongoro Highlands is itself a striking change of scenery.

Checking in to Marera Valley for your final night sets you up perfectly for an early start into the Ngorongoro Crater tomorrow — a fitting close to a safari built around following the Migration on its own terms.

Your final morning is spent inside the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and one of Africa's densest concentrations of wildlife anywhere on the continent. The crater floor packs grassland, swamp, and forest habitats into a single, walled arena roughly 20km across.

This is genuinely one of the best single-morning opportunities anywhere in Africa to see the Big Five, with healthy resident populations of lion, buffalo, and elephant, alongside a small, closely monitored population of black rhino. After your crater safari, you'll transfer to the airport to connect with your onward or departure flight.
