7 Days Discover Serengeti and Great Migration

With a full day ahead, your driver-guide will choose from a series of game-drive “loops” that depart from and reconnect with the main road, each threading through a different type of vegetation and habitat. A particular highlight of this region is its collection of hippo pools, where dozens of hippos wallow through the heat of the day — genuinely some of the easiest wildlife-spotting anywhere on safari.

The Western Corridor is also home to a localized population of black-and-white colobus monkeys — a lowland subspecies distinct from those found elsewhere in Tanzania — and to the country's highest recorded density of topi. If you're visiting during peak Migration season, patience at a known crossing point can be rewarded not just with a crossing, but with the crocodiles' opportunistic hunting as well. After a final morning game drive in the Western Corridor, you'll begin the roughly 80km (2.5 hour) transfer east to the Central Serengeti, often called the park's “wildlife hub.” Wildlife sightings continue right through the drive — this is not a transfer to be dozed through — and your driver-guide will use the journey itself as an extended game drive, tracking whatever the morning's radio chatter suggests is worth a detour for.

On arrival, you'll check in for lunch before heading straight back out for your first Central Serengeti game drive. This area is defined by the Seronera River, which threads through open grassland punctuated by dramatic granite kopjes — rocky outcrops that serve as lookout posts and sunbathing spots for the region's resident lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Big cat sightings here are amongst the most reliable anywhere in East Africa.

Today is entirely given over to exploring the Serengeti's beating heart, with morning and afternoon game drives covering the plains, riverine woodland, and kopje country around Seronera. Wildlife here rarely needs seeking out — more often it feels as though it comes to find you — and your driver-guide's local knowledge means today's specific highlight is genuinely impossible to predict in advance.

Lunch is taken out in the bush, one of the more memorable meals of any safari, before an afternoon spent searching further afield. Because this area sits precisely where bushland meets open grassland, it's an especially reliable spot for big cats hunting at the margins between cover and open ground — expect a real chance at lion, leopard, and cheetah on the same day, alongside more predictable elephant, buffalo, and giraffe sightings.

This morning brings the longest transfer of the safari — roughly 115km and around 5 hours — but the changing scenery more than earns the time in the vehicle. As you head north, the landscape opens into wooded grassland extending toward the Kenyan border, and you'll get acquainted with a whole new set of place names that define this stretch of the Migration's route: Bolongonja, Kogatende, Lamai, and the legendary Mara River itself.

You are now following directly in the Migration's footsteps, tracking the same herds of zebra and wildebeest that are, in season, preparing to cross the Mara into Kenya and back again. Crossings can't be guaranteed on any single day — nature simply doesn't work to a timetable — but your driver-guides know the likely crossing points better than almost anyone, and if today isn't the day, the Northern Serengeti has plenty more to offer regardless, including a small resident population of black rhino.

A second full day in the Northern Serengeti gives you the best possible chance at witnessing one of nature's most dramatic spectacles: a live river crossing at the Mara. Even without a crossing on the exact day you're watching, this stretch of the Serengeti rivals the south for sheer density of wildlife, and July through October is when crossings are, statistically, at their most frequent.

Beyond the Migration herds, keep watch for elephant, giraffe, and the diminutive dik-dik moving through the woodland margins, along with the resident predators that follow the herds north each year. Few places anywhere on the continent offer this concentration of drama and scale in a single day's game viewing — and with the crossings unresolved until the moment they happen, every hour holds real anticipation.

Overnight again at your Northern Serengeti lodge.

After a relaxed final breakfast at your lodge, you'll transfer to the Kogatende airstrip for your flight back to Kilimanjaro International Airport (or Arusha Airport, depending on your routing) — a last chance to take in the Serengeti from above before connecting onward with your departure flight.

The flight itself takes around two hours, tracing a route back across the very plains and rivers you've spent the past week exploring at ground level. It's a fitting close to a safari built entirely around following the Migration on its own terms — and, for many travelers, this final aerial view is the moment the sheer scale of what they've just witnessed truly sinks in.
