With a full day dedicated to the Northern Serengeti, your driver-guide will focus on the areas most likely to produce a river crossing, drawing on intimate knowledge of where and when the herds are moving. Crossings can't be guaranteed on any single day — the animals don't publish a schedule — but this is genuinely one of nature's most awe-inspiring sights when it happens, and patience here is consistently rewarded.

Even without a crossing on your exact day, the Northern Serengeti rarely disappoints: expect elephant, buffalo, eland, and gazelle throughout the day, along with a real possibility of cheetah, and even the area's small resident population of black rhino. If a crossing eludes you today, there's always tomorrow — and plenty more to see in the meantime.

After a final morning game drive in the north, you'll begin the roughly 115km (about 5 hour) transfer south to the Central Serengeti, passing through changing landscapes and wildlife along the way. This is far from a dead transfer day — the drive itself doubles as an extended game drive, with your driver-guide finding highlights en route.

On arrival in the Central Serengeti, often called the park's wildlife “hub,” you'll check in for lunch before an afternoon game drive introduces you to this markedly different landscape. The Seronera River threads through open grassland studded with dramatic granite kopjes — outcrops that serve as territorial markers and sunbathing spots for the area's resident lions, leopards, and cheetahs.

Wildlife here is abundant enough that it can feel as though it comes looking for you rather than the other way around. Today's specific highlight is impossible to predict — the animals don't work to a schedule — but this bushland-meets-grassland transition zone is a genuine favourite among the Serengeti's big cats, with lion, leopard, and cheetah all realistic possibilities.

Lunch is taken in the bush, one of the more memorable meals of any safari, before an afternoon game drive continues the search. Elephant, zebra, and antelope are all common here, and the Seronera area's permanent water sources mean the wildlife viewing stays reliably strong regardless of season.

After a final morning game drive in Serengeti, admiring its animal inhabitants one last time, you'll head south-east toward Ngorongoro, a distance of around 145km taking roughly 3.5 hours. If the Serengeti's vastness hasn't already struck you, the long, straight road past Simba Kopjes — familiar to fans of The Lion King — to Naabi Hill Gate will certainly do it, marking the divide between the two conservation areas.

This afternoon brings your first sight of the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and, unsurprisingly, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right. You'll check in to your lodge on the crater rim in time to settle in before tomorrow's descent into one of Africa's most celebrated single-day safaris.

An early departure, around 6am, takes you down into the vast crater floor itself. On one side sits the Lerai Forest, a pocket of near-tropical mountain forest and prime elephant country; nearby, swampland sometimes called the “elephant graveyard” draws aging male tuskers to its soft grasses. The crater supports around 120 lions with well-defined territories, alongside some 15,000 wildebeest, 9,000 zebra, and roughly 50 black rhino.

After your morning crater visit and lunch, you'll begin the approximately 4-hour, 250km journey back to Kilimanjaro International Airport, connecting with your onward or departure flight. It's a fitting close to a circuit built around two of East Africa's most concentrated wildlife experiences, back to back.
